Ilya Repin was born on August 5th 1844 in Chuhuiv, Ukraine, although he is considered Russian because of the Russian Empire. He is one of the old masters so its no surprise he sculpted as well as painted. His work is famous for its ability to express the tensions between social strata in that period of Russian history. His paintings strike me most because of the complexity of body language and interaction of characters in them, which I believe is the reason his paintings are so successful as social critiques. He died in 1930.
